When Eileen was 16 and still in Dumont High School, a college freshman named Norman took her on a date, but he got nowhere. The planned Norman conquest failed, although in 1066 the Normans did quite well at the Battle of Hastings.
However, as fate would have it, Norman was pledging my fraternity where I was the Pledge Master.
“Norman,” said I, “Find me a good date for our Valentine’s Day party.” So I had a blind date who turned out to be Eileen, and the rest is history. Norman got the maximum number of points.
Subsequently he had to go to Eileen’s house and read a poem to her while Florence, her mom, looked on at the front door.
Why am I telling you this, well I found a brochure from our visit to Hastings, England, and it reminded me of Norman.
