Editor’s note: Thank you Geanna. Michael’s birth was scheduled (i.e. induced), but they almost sent Eileen home for lack of progress. She’s very slow—it takes her 1 1/2 hours to watch 60 Minutes. As for the access, during my 5 years at that hospital, this was the only time I photographed inside. A hospital could be a great place to do journalistic photography, but it is usually not a great idea. Ironically, Michael became a professional photographer who, later when he was with the APP, did a photo essay inside an operating room (with the surgeon’s permission). Perhaps I will post one of that series on BF.
Awesome picture Paul as your son arrived in our equally awesome world. I too captured great images with my Pentax Spotmatic F camera but never in the delivery room. How amazing that must have been. Thanks for sharing this one as we celebrate the birth of our Savior this Christmas soon to arive!

Awesome picture. I remember back in the day, cameras were rare in the delivery room. We had to fight tooth and nail to have a picture taken in the delivery room (of a delivery) for our nursing school year book. But it was worth it as it is an awesome picutre as well.

Sooner, rather than later, I hope you have that picture framed, and that you & Eileen write notes on the back of it to Michael’s first born. It doesnt matter When that might occur, you should just DO IT! There couldnt be a more personal gift a grandparent could pass along to a grandchild, it’s priceless.
Hello world! My younger son Michael made a grand entrance. I was a member of the staff, so the obstetrician gave me permission to photograph. At that time, fathers were rarely allowed to be present in the delivery room.
At first I was frozen. But then I saw that things were going well so I started shooting. My camera was a Pentax Spotmatic that a friend brought back from Korea for me. It was my first 35 mm camera.
As for Michael, he now lives in Florida and works for the Justice Department. Before that, he was a staff photographer for the Asbury Park Press and he lived for a while in Ocean Grove. We sometimes post his work on Blogfinger.
