AMA Morning Rounds for physicians; shared by Dr. Goldfinger:

NBC NEWS:     (2/12, Carroll) reports “people who lower the amount of salt in their diets by using a salt substitute may significantly decrease the risk of developing high blood pressure, a study” suggests. The study “found that cutting salt back by more than a third by swapping in another mineral supplement – salty-tasting potassium chloride – along with other flavorings, such as mushroom, seaweed and lemon, was protective against high blood pressure over a two-year period.

The findings were published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

At Blogfinger we  have long advocated salt restriction to help prevent and treat  hypertension.   We wrote about this in our book “Prevention Does Work: A Guide to a Healthy Heart.”  (still in print).  Pages 20 and 26.
