This is a device to cut a cross into the rounded top of a chestnut as part of preparing for roasting. It is a safety tool to keep someone from cutting themselves while trying to do it with a knife.
Remember the song, “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire……”
Chestnuts are available in food stores now. Wegmans and Delicious Orchards have them. But they will go bad if you wait too long to roast them. There are recipes on line. I love chestnuts.
When I was a kid my grandma used to roast them on her ancient black cast iron stove top, and sometimes they would explode. That’s the part I enjoyed the most.
