Each year the newly resurrected Illumination Night reappears like “Brigadoon,” but this event never stays quite the same.
And this festival of lights doesn’t glow until nightfall although it begins earlier. Everyone looks forward to night. And it is a religious event; not fully welcoming for all.

Illumination Night was never an OG tradition, but was inspired by the event in Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard, MA.
In that event, there is a ceremonial lighting of the first lantern, then all the others are lit at once. It is very popular and draws many tourists. At one point, the date of the event was kept secret to reduce attendance.
