THE FIVE SATINS: “In the Still of the Night” is one of the top Doo Wop songs in the history of that genre. It was written by Freddie Parris.
This recording contains a famous tenor sax solo, one of my favorites, —performed by Jimmy Mazzetta.
Much of that doo wop music was written and performed by Italian-American musicians from New York and Philadelphia. Many black doo woo groups also composed and performed big rock and roll hits.
Hit songs of that era were often done by white and also black groups—rarely mixed. In this case the Five Satins were black while Dion and the Belmonts were white.
