The well pictured was the first of nine driven in 1870 to a depth of about 22 feet. In 1881, it was enclosed with a gazebo for $92.75 as part of a beautification project for Auditorium Park. It was named “Beersheba” at that time after a biblical well. A handpump brought up the water to a common chained cup. In 1911, NJ outlawed common cups as being unsanitary.
Beersheba was then connect to the town water supply, provided with an iron basin from the Mott Iron Works of Trenton, and a sanitary drinking fountain consisting of a vertical stream within a protective brass funnel. The drinking arrangements have changed over the years and the gazebo restored several times.
