« Only trust your heart. OG beach early evening, summer 2022.
They came to the Grove for a shower but they couldn’t resist our surf. »

Modern OG history: patiently waiting on the boards. It was the threat of lightening; on the beach, off the beach, on the beach.

August 2022. I recall it was a threat of lightening reventing these folks from going on the beach, and it wasn’t Sunday. The storm passed.   PAUL GOLDFINGER photo.Click to enlarge

They waited……PAUL GOLDFINGER photo. 8/22

Coming and going and coming…..It doesn’t matter. Some stayed and others left— hello, goodbye.

But we can work it out, even the day trippers,, but  after all is said and done,  all you really need is love.

Being on the boardwalk during lightning is no safer than being on the beach. People need to get indoors at such times. In recent years, monitors have been developed that can detect increasing electrical charges in the air and sound a warning of possible strikes. I thought I read that OG was going to get such a system in conjunction with the new pier.

Between 1880 and 1950, there were 28 lightning strikes reported in the newspapers. Yet lightning rods seem uncommon except at the Auditorium and the new Youth Temple and restroom.

“During the terrific thunder-storm which struck this region at 5 P. M. yesterday, the cottage of Judson Stiles at [141 Abbott Avenue,] Ocean Grove, was struck by lightning. The shock paralyzed Mrs. Stiles, and doubts are entertained of her recovery. An infant in her arms was not injured”—14 June 1880.
