True conversation. This morning Feb 22, 2023. On the boardwalk staring at the new pier. It’s me taking pictures. A voice from behind says, “Not too many workers. They don’t seem to be working more than a few hours per day.”
I look around and there is an African-American man who also was watching the pier “work.” A couple of guys are out on the pier. I mention his race because there has been some talk based on the CMA (Michael Badger) that says that Grovers will be “discriminating” if we have a residential parking sticker plan for only Grovers. He was worried about Neptuners coming to our beach.
Me: It looks like they’re doing OK with the pier. Where are you from?
Him: Neptune. I like to come here. I’m wondering about the cross.
Me: What do you mean?
Him: I think it looks like a T, but some think it is a cross, but so what.
Me: You don’t care?
Him: It makes no difference, it’s their pier, isn’t it?
Me: Well it’s more complicated than that. Have you had parking problems coming here to the beach. We’re thinking of a permit parking plan.
Him: I have no trouble parking when I come to the beach–I just get here early.
Me: I don’t think too many Grove residents care about that cross.
Him: They should just think of it as a T.
Me: Good talk. See ya—and we both move on.

The next person you meet at the pier, ask them if an inanimate object like the pier can discriminate against them depending if they see the pier as a t or a t(cross).
The gentleman was correct, most common sense people see the issue as a non issue.
Editor’s note: Thanks Kevin, but I don’t believe that anyone has actually polled the populace in the Grove. Your conclusion would be “hear say” or opinion, but not fact. However, I do agree with you. (My opinion based on conversations with Grovarians. ) –Paul
