I happened to live in the Bronx when this building was constructed in the early 1970s along with several others of similar design. The style was what we call “Brutalism” today and featured massive forms in oversize brick. Unfortunately, this material tended to leak badly and was covered with metal siding in some cases. A clever, but ultimately fatal design was to have two-level apartments. There was no hallway on the upper floor and that space incorporated into the apartments. I believe the buildings received some architectural awards. Tragically, persons on the second level became trapped by smoke during a fire and had no other exit but the lower floor door. This development was intended to attract middle income tenants, but these were scared off by the deteriorating social conditions. I left for Queens in 1976.
