Here’s the story: It was a lovely beach day; a Friday .August 26 afternoon in Ocean Grove when some evil black clouds with thunder started to roll in.
It wasn’t long before just about everyone, beach staff included, had exited the beach and wound up on the boards gathering their stuff to escape.
But, miracle of miracles, the clouds started to fade, and the sun reappeared. Then the crowd on the boards (see photo) had a decision to make: “Should we leave or go back onto the beach? We can still get some more sun time.”
I don’t know who decided what, but this was one of life’s decisive moments.
Eileen and I were just walking the boards–no brainer.. We braved the whole mini-weather cycle and then we left.
We met a young couple, tourists from NYC. They were all packed up ready to go, so go they went.
From Fiddler on the Roof: “Miracle of Miracles.”
Editor’s note: My mother’s parents came from the same area of Eastern Europe as depicted in Fiddler. And my grandfather was a tailor. And, miracle of miracles, God gave me:
ART GARFUNKEL. (His parents were also immigrants). With this song from My Fair Lady.
Everyone was kicked off the beach for lightning.
