The Sanibel Lighthouse

The Sanibel Island Lighthouse.  Florida southwest coast.    . Paul Goldfinger photo

The Sanibel Lighthouse is the first lighthouse on the Gulf Coast which is north of Key West.  It is on the eastern tip of Sanibel Island.   When you cross the Causeway and drive onto the island, turn left on Periwinkle Way and go about 10 minutes south until you arrive at the parking lot for the Sanibel Lighthouse Beach.  Park your car and pay at the kiosk.  Then walk over to the beach and turn left.  You will soon arrive at the lighthouse.  You can walk up to it, but you can’t go into it.

It was built in 1884, entirely of iron.  It is 98 feet tall—102 feet above sea level.  The Lighthouse does function and it is on the National Register of Historic Places.  The beach is excellent and so is the pier.  It is free to go on the beach.  The fishing pier is nearby.   —Paul
