Thoughts & Prayers—a poem by George Held

May 26, 2022 by Blogfinger

Thoughts & Prayers

are offered right after the gunfire of mass murder: preachers and pols reflexively offer "thoughts & prayers" just before they defend the right to bear arms, the ultimate law of the realm. But thoughts & prayers are cheap, a ritual response after a massacre's victims are carted away, but might suffice no more. No one deserves to die because a guy with a gun zeroes in on him, though he'll get lots of "thoughts & prayers." How do they make you feel?

To give you an idea of the lyrics to this song (translated from Spanish:)

    “I will miss you
    You can count on that
You never think that life could end in a split second
    Life is like dust
It can scatter in a moment
    You didn’t bring anything
You can’t take anything with you
Only that which you carry inside of you…”

George’s poem is about the futility of saying something comforting at such a terrible time. Hopefully society can find ways to prevent such tragedies as occurred in Buffalo and elsewhere in this country.
