In our recent discussion about another older song lyric, we wondered whether lyric writers in Sinatra’s era understood women. This song, lyrics by Neil Diamond, was written in 1967.

There is a message repeated three times:

“Girl, you’ll be a woman soon
    Please, come take my hand
Girl, you’ll be a woman soon
    Soon, you’ll need a man”

Feminism has evolved in stages. Betty Friedan wrote the Feminine Mystique in 1963. Did she complain about this lyric?
