Snowy chaos on the streets of OG: 3 days after the storm.

February 2, 2022 by Blogfinger

Flashing lights gather on the Main Avenue side of Firemen’s Park. Tuesday Feb 1, 2022 at about 6:00 pm.

It was late afternoon on Tuesday Feb 1 near Main Avenue, Firemen’s Park and Mt. Hermon Way.  The snow situation was messy, but everyone was parked by following the snow sign directions.

Theoretically, the side where everyone was parked should have freed up the “no parking” side for cleaning.   But the plowing on that vacated side was not good enough to make for easy parking.

This is the messy side of the street where parked cars were supposed to be moved to. This car was in the hatched area. Was that violation OK today? Blogfinger photo. 2/1/22. And some parked too close to stop signs. Would that be enforced today? And how about the shoveling ordinance famously sponsored by the Groaners–with a fine. Was that enforced?

The north  side of Mt. Hermon is where the cars were supposed to move to. But that side was not in good shape for parking. Blogfinger photo. 2/1/22

Ocean Grove.  Tuesday late afternoon.

Paul Goldfinger, Editor  Blogfinger.net  2/2/22  (lots of twos for one day..   2 B or not 2 B)

Late in the afternoon, some of us heard a rumor that we all would have to move our cars to the other side of our streets   (except Main)  ie to the side with the “no snow parking” signs.

Then, at about 6 pm, there was a gathering of vehicles with flashing lights on the Main Avenue side of the park.  At that time an email from Neptune appeared, but not many received it.  It verified that we had to move our cars to the side of the street with the snow signs.   It asked us to get it done, preferably after 9 pm

Meanwhile a neighbor called the Mother Ship and spoke to several people about the situation , and there was, according to him, confusion with their responses.

So two of us moved our cars as requested, but it wasn’t easy because that side of the street was ill prepared.  Then a “traffic” police car came by and verified the instructions and said we could move the cars now—6:30 pm. She also said that there would  be no towing and no tickets.

A woman came by on Mt. Hermon, happy to find an easy space to get into–but, not so fast!    She was on the wrong side.  I had to tell her the bad news—she was not happy now as she moved her car across the street

It seemed like we finally had a handle on the situation, and soon it turned dark, and as many of us were relaxing at home, a police car rode slowly down Delaware and onto Mt. Hermon, flashing lights ablaze, and a loudspeaker roaring into the night air, “Move your cars off this street, do not park here, or you will be towed or ticketed.” The car kept moving, not stopping to see if anyone had any questions.  If he had stopped near my house I would have spoken to him about the discrepancies.

As far as I could see, no one was going to obey those abrupt, loud, and alarming demands.

We wound up with a situation on Mt. Hermon where there were cars on both sides.  It was almost comical.

And, by the way, a well kept secret:  no recycling pickup until Saturday.

Who is responsible for this chaos?   They should be transferred to another job, one less empowered to make unreasonable and confusing short-notice  demands on citizens.

And, you can go to the Neptune Township web site and sign up for their email blasts.  Neptunetownship.org

    Redbird on a Black Bough

    Cardinal, cloaked in red
    Like his Eminence
    Whose name you bear;
    Principal of all red,

    Preening your carmine breast;
    Vermilion swatch
    On a bare branch;
    Coal black mask, blood red crest;

    Overwintering, you
    Redeem the bleak
    Leafless landscape:
    Crimson on a black bough.

    Total chaos last night and again this morning with snow removal and parking on the western end of Main Ave.

    Wednesday, Feb 2, 2022, Ocean Grove:

    In three emails sent over two days Neptune was unable to provide clear guidance on how and when then would be working each side of the street and how parking should be handled. The last message did say that towing would commence at 7 am Wednesday – but they were towing cars here by 7 pm Tuesday.

    This morning at 7:30 am they commenced to tow cars from the side of the street they told us to move to last night.

    Kudos to the workers who did this additional plowing, but the management and messaging of it was abysmal.

    And now if they would only clear the sidewalk intersections that they pushed the snow back into: Understand that clearing of roads is critical for emergency vehicle access; but pedestrians need to get though also.

    Neptune Township Emergency Management had a good idea for this particular snowstorm.

    However, they did a poor job in messaging their idea.

    They start by saying Ocean Grove has alternate side of the street parking. NOT SO! We in OG have signs that say No Parking when the street is snow covered.

    They then put into process, a process to amend a process that does not exist.

    What they did is un-enforceable, but they are enforcing it.

    The entire Township Committee should resign.
