THE TOKENS:

“The Lion Sleeps Tonight” was written and recorded by an African woman in 1939, and the lyrics were in Zulu.  Subsequently George David Welss wrote the English lyrics that the Tokens used in their recording.

Mr. Weiss also wrote the lyrics to Lullaby of Birdland and he collaborated on a few Broadway hits.
