“I cover the waterfront
I’m watching the sea
Will the one I love
Be coming back to me?”

ERROLL GARNER: “I Cover the Waterfront” 100 Ans De Jazz (100 years of Jazz)
Progress: I make a hobby of studying the demographics of Ocean Grove, a very unusual American small town. I still pay attention to how many teen-agers, small children, young couples, BMW’s, Jews, NY plates, restored Victorian houses, and ethnic varieties are here. I also pay attention to what the Camp Meeting Association and the real estate markets are doing.
These are indicators. After all, in 1870, there were perhaps 98% white Methodists, but now look at it.
Racial minorities are few, but I counted 5 African-Americans at Days today. I can’t help it–should have been a socialist. (I mean someone who studies sociology)
A few years ago I met a Chinese family who had a multifamily house down the block from me which they rented out except one apt. But you would have a hard time noticing them. I guess they weren’t around much.
A woman down the block said to me, “I wish we had more racial minorities in the Grove; none of my neighbors are.”
I said, “But xxx you have a Chinese family 3 houses from you..”
She: Really?
So in this town an ice cream cone may mean progress.
