David. Fascinating! As a photographer, I have an interest in this. In recent years photo technology has given us cameras designed for low light (including night-time) situations by virtue of highly sensitive image sensors. They produce black and white images, and those cameras are called “monochrome.” I have two versions of that, and some of our readers may have noticed the increased frequency of black and white photos on Blogfinger.net.
But I noticed something that I don’t think has been discussed in photo circles: When one shoots with such gear at night, instead of a night time image, the sky appears as if it is daylight. From an artistic and realistic point of view, that is bizarre.
If a photographer is aware of this issue, by pre-visualizing his image, he can produce a result where subjects can be seen without causing the night to turn into day. I even have a song: “Night and day you are the one.”
A number of states, including New York, have adopted the Dark Sky Initiative which encourages outdoor lighting that does not shine up into the sky.
A few years ago, NYC replaced all of its streetlight heads with a model consisting of recessed LEDs that do not shine above the horizontal plane of the fixture. This has made the sky darker when I look out my window in Queens.
OG has had various kinds of fixtures over the years and perhaps a newer style might be in order.
