David. I would say that you have earned credibility as an Ocean Grove history expert.
We encourage you to continue setting us straight on OG history. If you ever want to write a piece on Blogfinger, just submit it to me at Blogfinger.net.
–Paul from Blogfingerland.
I am a retired biochemical and molecular lab technologist in reproductive genetics. I have written four books and numerous articles on the history of American pipe organ builders. I have been involved with the Historical Society of Ocean Grove for a number of years.
During the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, I wrote about 35 research papers on various aspects of Ocean Grove.
My most recent discovery was that Ocean Grove Anniversary Day has been celebrated on the wrong date all these years. Stokes claimed it was on Tuesday, 31 July 1869. Well, that date turns out to be a Saturday. Tuesday was the more likely date as it was claimed the prayer meeting was held instead of watching the moon-rise on the beach around 9 pm. On the 31st, this would have been closer to 11:30 pm. I was recently honored by having the museum annex named for me.
David Fox: Thank you for your historic insights. Are you a historian? Please tell us if you have any history credentials.—Paul Blogfinger.net
When the fountain was restored, there were color samples provided by the company in a rather limited pallet. At its original installation, the fountain was described as being of bronze color. However, this was eventually covered with a verdigris green, apparently in stages.
The present two-tone paint enhances the raised ornamentation of the iron. Darker colors hide rust stains better than others.
