The Screwpine (Pandanus utilis) is a rare tropical species native to Madagascar. The owner paid $2,500 when it was smaller, 7 years ago. Notice the seedpods hanging down, but it is not a male. It is a female tree. The unusual bottom contains secondary growth for support; those are not roots. When they delivered this tree, it took 6 men to place the root ball in to a hole.
The owner, Billy, says that he spends “all” his money on plants, so his garden contains a wide variety including a “money tree” which, if you thought that money grows on trees, it doesn’t. We have a photo of his money tree.
He also has cactuses as well as crown-of-thorn plants that could seriously injure someone who gets too close. Eileen and I interviewed him, and that article is posted on tropicanaforum.com our sister blog for when we are in Fla-la-land.
