You might think that Firemen’s Park is a historic place, and it is, but the idea to name it in honor of firemen is not historic, so any suggestion that the name and dedication be changed is perfectly valid.
We have criticized the park for its poor upkeep, its ugly centerpiece with a bell surrounded by horrible black metal spiked fencing and dangerous shrubs with sharp needles, and uninspired and unwelcoming design. In recent days the center has been left unlocked–a welcome change, but we don’t know if that is policy or just a mistake.
We suggested that the park be rededicated to honor all Ocean Grove heroes, not just firemen. And along with that re-dedication should be a promise to redesign the park by a landscape architect along with proper plantings and grass, suitable to attract visitors and allow kids and adults to enjoy the park; and proper maintenance.
Recently the park has become more popular, perhaps due to the increased numbers of escapees from elsewhere who are avoiding the COVID virus.
In the last few days we met a couple from Asbury who brought folding chairs and sat enjoying the bright sunshine. Another couple engaged in synchronized exercises. Others come and picnic, and kids practice baseball catches. Dog-walkers are a staple. Kids on big-wheels race around on the converging cement pathways. Lately we have seen small groups, eg 6-8 people, distancing in a circle at the park–just to socialize and chat, with and without masks.
And bikers peddle by all the time, so it is an important spot, and it is the first sight seen as people drive into down after the “gates.” Shouldn’t it be better?
So here is the history:
Here is a link to a 2014 BF article about this North End unkempt treasure which deserves our attention in our historic town.
“What’s it all about?” Alfie?
