a. Bradley Beach, a shore town to our south, which is larger than OG, has had only one mega event each season, and that has just been cancelled. Many of the residents there resented the large event which brought 70,000 tourists into town for 3 days on the Labor Day weekend.

A scene from a prior BB Lobster Festival.
Citizen complaints caused the Lobster Festival to be cancelled last year, and now the 2020 event has been cancelled because of a dispute between the town and the Passion Group which was to stage the event. Some residents are happy about this cancellation.
The Memorial Day parade and festival, a fairly modest event, was also cancelled for 2020; but the parade will remain. A lesser version of the festival may still be scheduled.
B. Beach has a variety of smaller events each summer, held at their Main St. venue— Riley Park. The themes include Bluegrass music, crafts, arts in the park, Latin, Beatles and then they have sidewalk sales days. No mega messes there. These events can be enjoyed by the locals and by a manageable number of tourists.
We have written about this subject in 2018 and 2019. Just do a search using our search box at the top right corner of our home page. Type in Bradley Beach.
What is amazing is that B. Beach feels the small town pain of one large event each season while OG has to endure 10 of them. It’s not right that our town is used as a venue for tourist glut, parking mayhem, and a money sucking location when none of those events does any good for the town itself.
But unlike B. Beach, our citizens don’t seem to care. And that’s no bull.

b. Better Parking Alliance has plans and needs help. This is from the BPA:
“We’re writing because you indicated when you completed a Better Parking Alliance (BPA) online survey that you are willing to help on this important initiative. We need your help in getting out the word on the next step that the BPA is taking to help improve parking in Ocean Grove.
“On Saturdays, March 7, April 4, and June 6, 2020, the BPA will facilitate a series of “Open Forums on OG Parking” at the Neptune Public Library. Specifically, we’d like you to help canvass Ocean Grove and distribute flyers about the Forums:”
“On or about Friday, February 21, we’ll provide you with printed flyers about these meetings along with an assigned area of town for distribution, which will include 100-125 residences (single family homes, condos, apartments
- Over Saturday and Sunday, February 22 and 23, we ask that you distribute flyers to each residence in your assigned area.
“Our goal is to let every single resident know about these important meetings. We’ll also be supplementing these efforts with an e-blast and social media posts.”
