Seascape

An insistent tide of light and shadow
on the walls and floors of my apartment
leads me through each quiet day from bed
to shower to kitchen to desk, the rhythm
of the sea in each passage of sun and moon,
in each step I take toward dawn and noon
and dusk and night. Though my life is here,
in a New York tower, with no clear view
of the ocean beyond, my feet are always
walking along a bright or darkened shore.
