May 9, 2018 by Blogfinger

Special to Blogfinger:

In 1969 Simon & Garfunkel sang about Mrs. Wagner’s Pies in their song “America”. But who was Mrs. Wagner? Mrs. Wagner started a pie baking empire in the 1870s in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. In this video, learn about this enterprising 19th century woman and her secret for baking irresistible pies.

Written, researched and hosted by Kim Brittingham, walking tour guide for “Tiny Tours of Ocean Grove.”   Published February 17, 2017.

I knew the line in the beautiful song, but never knew the OG connection. Quite interesting.
There is a woman in OG now following Mrs.Wagner’s example, but she bakes and sells scones.

This comment is from YouTube. 2017:

“I grew up a few blocks from the Brookyln plant. The aroma was intoxicating, and we often bought the broken pies. I remember the pie tins, and the single serving pies were in all the local delis and supermarkets. I didn’t know until now about the Simon and Garfunkel connection.”
