Palace Amusements was open for 110 years. It was closed in 1988 and demolished in 2004 over the objections of a variety of historic preservation groups.
“Tillie” was a grinning face that was painted on the building. That mural was saved and stored. A replica is painted on the Wonder Bar in A. Park
BOB SEGER AND THE SILVER BULLET BAND:
R.I.P. Palace Amusements . A fancy entertainment complex was to go where the Palace stood . Never happened. Instead a parking lot sits where the Palace once was. At “Save Tillie’s” expense, one of the two Tillie faces was removed. It was to be put on public display.
Despite developers’ promise to do so, here we are, 13 years later, and it still is sitting in a crate by the Asbury sewer plant .
