Missing Jesus. Photo by Paul Goldfinger Tuesday, November 29, 2011. Firemen's Park, Ocean Grove, NJ
Early Tuesday morning, at about 12:30 a.m., a resident saw two people wearing hooded shirts in Firemen’s Park running from the vicinity of the creche and then down Delaware Avenue towards Wesley Lake. The resident called the police immediately, and three patrol cars arrived within 2-3 minutes. The resident jumped into his truck and went to the other side of the nearby footbridge, but he didn’t see the individuals who had left the scene. Evidently the police did not catch them either. The OG resident stressed that he did not witness those two individuals actually stealing anything. A similar theft occurred two years ago. Isn’t it tradition to put Jesus in the manger on Christmas day? That’s how I always remembered it.
Its a pretty sad commentary. Hopefully there are divine retributions down the line for those who think this is sport or something to steal.
So sad. Would a security camera with brighter lighting throughout the night be less intrusive than plexi-glass or fencing? I don’t know if this is a feasible alternative.
If they had waited to put Christ in the manger on the day He arrived as is traditional we wouldn’t have a problem
The figurine is custom made & hand painted, so there is no chance we can get a replacement before Christmas Eve. Also, the company that manufactured the set may have ceased operations.
The theft occurred around 12:30 AM today, while the Park was fully lit. The fence or locked gate was scaled to gain access to the Nativity scene.
Anyone with information can either contact Neptune Police (732-988-8000) or me @ 732-775-7300.
Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, the stealing of the baby Jesus figurine from creches has become sport over the years. Maybe it’s time to protect the Fireman’s Park creche with plexi-glass or fencing as is done in other communities. A shame that it’s come to this, but this is the reality of the time we live in.
Truly reprehensible and sacrilegious. Just how low will these criminals stoop?
Yet another unsolved theft in Ocean Grove. We’re probably pushing 1,000 of those this year. Someone really needs to do something about this crime wave.
I think that can be classified as a hate crime! That is just horrible. No respect.
