NEWS ABOUT HURRICANE IRENE AND OCEAN GROVE

August 25, 2011 by Blogfinger

Sunday 8 am:  Joan Venezia called. She and Al drove around town and found no significant damage or flooding.  There were some tree limbs down. Electricity is on.  APP.com is a good source of local  information as is FM 101.5. Channel Two is doing video live coverage from Belmar, AP and Spring Lake.

The eye of Irene is soon to arrive. She will be soon downgraded to a tropical storm, but flooding, winds, and rain will continue. Spring Lake is lower than we are and they have been hit fairly hard.  Asbury Park has some damage on the boards. Police are chasing onlookers off the AP boardwalk.  Wesley Lake flooded on the Asbury side.

See citizen reports above for more OG details.  Grovers please send photos.

Saturday 7:15 pm:   The shelter at Wall High School is only accepting people with medical problems.  There is a nurse on duty.  There is room at Holmdel  and Colts Neck High Schools.  No pets are accepted at the shelters.

We drove back today (Sunday). The town is OK; some trees are down. It’s still pretty windy.

That’s excellent news! The Auditorium must be ok as well. I can’t imagine all the work removing all the tents just to put them back up–unless being the end of the season they are calling it quits. So glad everything is ok down there. Things up here are was all heavy rain and the ground is like a spring thaw. Wind is kicking up so we are worried about trees going over.

We drove around Fletcher Lake this morning and didn’t see any evidence of flooding. Nor did we see any obvious damage to homes. Driving around town, I saw some trees down, but thankfully didn’t see any obvious structural damage.

How are the houses around fletcher? Anyone?

  7. on August 28, 2011 at 10:42 am Anonymous

Anyone know about Fletcher Lake? Did it overflow?

  8. on August 28, 2011 at 10:40 am John

Sorry to ask again, but please, Somebody tell me how the first three blocks in Abbott are doing. Thanks!

  9. on August 28, 2011 at 10:37 am John

Hello. I have a house on the third block on Abbott. My good friends have a house on the first block of Abbott. Is that area okay? We have evacuated so i not know. Thanks!

    How is Fletcher Lake doing?

  11. on August 27, 2011 at 9:47 pm Heather

Ditto on BJ’s request. We left OG yesterday to return home, but would appreciate knowing how the Auditorium and tents fare. Thanks

  12. on August 27, 2011 at 5:57 pm BJ

Hey all, If at all possible, appreciate any updates on the condition of the Auditorium as this progresses. I’m an Ocean Grover at heart and would appreciate that! I’m in Upstate NY and have no way keep up. God bless you all down there and may He keep you all safe!

Asked this question in another thread. National Hurricane Center storm surge probability map has most of OG, except the extreme Northwest Corner (where I live) with a 80-90% chance of experiencing a 2ft surge threat and 50-60% chance of experiencing a 3ft surge threat. Does this mean that it’s guaranteed that most of the town will be under 2ft of ocean water? Anybody know?

Just heard on ABC – the Monmouth County Sheriff said that the Wall Township shelter is at capacity and you should seek to shelter with friends and family if at all possible.

    Thank you for the correction

Great job – but it’s Christie not Christy

    Nancy C:

Neptune has listed the mandatory evacuation flood zones on the township website, here:

    http://www.neptunetownship.org/places/mandatory-evacuation-order-for-residents-in-flood-zones

For OG it looks like Broadway and portions South of Broadway, basically, the Fletcher Lake Area. I’m kind of suprised they didn’t include all of Ocean Avenue. Based on the latest forecast, wind predictions, surge predictions, etc, this is looking most like the ’92 Nor’easter than anything.

  18. on August 26, 2011 at 11:47 pm Carol L

Yes, we also are not in a flood zone, according to my insurance company, but we’ve been getting the calls. We’re on Bath, second block. Still, who wants to split hairs here? If 35 and 33 are flooded (and I can attest to the depth of the water on 33 last Sunday), getting out will be difficult if you wait until you need to go.

  19. on August 26, 2011 at 10:35 pm Anonymous

Mandatory Evacuation Order was issued for flood zone residents
    as of 6pm 8-26-11
Broadway from Ocean to Pilgrim Pathway
    Central from Broadway to Stockton
    All of Fletcher Lake Dr.
Inskip Ave. from Lawrence to New York
    Stockton from Pennsylvania to Central
Franklin from Pilgrim Pathway to Central
Clark from Pilgrim Pathway to Central
Cookman from Pilgrim Pathway to Central
Those in these areas are told to leave by noon 8-27-11
FD went door to door in these areas

  20. on August 26, 2011 at 10:09 pm Iris

Yes. I didn’t get that call, but a friend did. They called the police to check it out, and the police said they didn’t have to leave.

I have received two confusing robocalls and emails from Neptune – saying that my house was “in an identified flood zone” even though it is not according to the latest flood maps. Anyone else dealing with the same confusion?

  22. on August 26, 2011 at 6:20 pm Donna Hamilton

Hope this hurricane is not too bad for everyone. We have just returned from NYC and can certainly appreciate the dilemma of evacuating the region…
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

The Governor said “Get the hell off the beach in Asbury Park and get out. You’re done,” “It’s 4:30. You’ve maximized your tan. Get off the beach. Get in your cars and get out of those areas.” to be exact.

  24. on August 26, 2011 at 2:41 pm Blogfinger

Sorry, but I haven’t. I would expect Neptune to notify us. It makes sense re Rt 35 because of the flooding last week near Wegmans Paul

  25. on August 26, 2011 at 2:05 pm Heather McLaughlin

Paul, have you heard anywhere that Rt’s 35 and 36 will be closed at some point today? I’ve heard rumors, but was looking for confirmation.

  26. on August 26, 2011 at 1:55 pm JamieOG

I live on Lawrence and Embury, between Broadway and Main. (next to the empty lot by Old Neptune HS) I’ve never really had any flooding problems but have only been here since 2004. Army Corps of Engineer Maps show no storm surge threat on my block, even with a Cat 3 or 4 storm. (most this one will be is Cat 2, which is still huge…Cat 2 hasn’t hit NJ since we started tracking this stuff around the turn of the centure) National Weather Service storm surge projection map shows the same. It is relatively high ground and about 1/2 mile from the beach and far enough away from either lake. (plus, Wesley Lake is much lower than my house) Any longtimers have any idea what the flood threat – other than gathering rain water – is on my block? I’m probably going to ride this one out because we have five cats and a puppy and basically no where to go. (all of my immediate relatives in the area live either as closer or closer to the water than we do) I’m obviously worried about wind by I can avoid that by going in my basement…but not if it’s a flooded. (and want to avoid the heat and wind risks associated with the attack) I don’t really have any area of my house without windows. Don’t have a lot of windows but there’s at least one in each room, including the upstairs hallway.
