Six or seven weeks ago we warned everyone that Neptune Township was seriously cracking down on violators who park in those yellow-striped rectangular no-parking areas at intersections.
Now comes word from an alert reader that the heat is indeed on. Via email she tells us the NPD’s new Parking Enforcement car is “running around town” ticketing people for parking partially within these spaces.
It’s a fire safety issue. Fire fighting equipment can’t turn the corners of Ocean Grove’s narrow streets unless they’ve got space at the intersections. — CL

I got a ticket last week. My front wheels were touching the yellow box. Luckily they got my license plate number wrong on the ticket!
The angle parking in legal spaces also presents a problem. When I turn left on Main Ave from Pennsylvania Ave, if there is an SUV, van or large car parked in space adjacent to the south side of Main, one cannot see cars traveling east. As much as we need parking in the Grove, eliminating that space would enhance safety.
The lines are supposed to be yellow, as it is the state-mandated standard at this time. Red does not have the reflective value of yellow, particularly on asphalt.
RE; OLDTIMER, RED / YELLOW.
I DON’T RE-CALL EVER SEEING A RED PROHIBITED LINE IN NEW JERSEY.
IF I DID, MY FIRST THOUGHT WOULD BE, “WHAT’S THAT MEAN?”
NOT KNOWING, I STILL WOULD NOT PARK IN IT. THIS IS NOT STREET-ART, IT’S PAINTED FOR A REASON.
I KNOW WHAT YELLOW MEANS, DON’T PARK IN IT OR YOU WILL BE TICKETED, OR NOW, “WARNING” DON’T PARK IN THE YELLOW OR YOU WILL BE TICKETED.

I agree, this is great. My house happens to be at the end of a block with two of these yellow boxes and plenty of out-of-towners have abused these lines while I have had to circle the block many times trying to find a spot. Maybe they can actually make a little revenue from this and give us Grovers’s a little break on a seasonal pass…just kidding 🙂
According to the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the national standard for traffic signals, signs, markings and lights, and the basis for all NJ Motor Vehicle Statutes, yellow pavement markings denote “warning” A red pavement marking indicates a “prohibition”. The same colr scheme as a traffic lights.
Neptune has known this for years, but refuses to paint these zones red, to be in confomance to NJ Motor Vehicle Statutes
Mike — I had that very problem just this morning. I had to creep way out into oncoming traffic to see the oncoming traffic. I got honked at, but, really, I had no other choice because the cars parked at the corner blinded me. This was crossing Broadway. But seeing to get across Main Avenue can be even harder.
I know parking space is at a premium, but I actually think at many of our intersections the no-parking rectangles should be even longer than they are now.
This is good! Too many people park right at the corners and block visibility at the intersections to cross traffic. This is a real road hazard. You have to move out into the cross street just to see if someone is coming and then it’s too late.
Thank God most people drive more slowly and cautiously, but there are some who ignore the situation and put everyone in peril.
Speed limits should be rigorously enforced, especially on the entrance and exit roads. People are impatient to get in and out and put bike riders and children in jeopardy.
Also people are too quick to beep at all hours when they see geese in the road. Just drive slowly at the animals and they will move out of the way. They ignore the honking. They do the same.
For any who may not understand being ticketed….think, “partially pregnant.”
