“We are ending the war on protein,” Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in a White House post today.
We wrote about the new nutrition pyramid and we are told to eat more red meat (eg steaks) and whole milk. In the past nutritionists emphasized less saturated fat and more fruits and veggies. In our book “Prevention Does Work: A Guide to Healthy Heart.” we emphasized the importance of diets that limit red meat and whole milk. Our conclusion was that a Mediterranean style diet would be the best.
Now food manufacturers are coming up with high protein food selections. We will be seeing more such foods in stores. Already Starbucks has come up with high protein drinks. And there are high protein snack bars.
Wegmans has fired a broadside at its customers with new versions of high protein milk including a whole milk version and a 2% fat version and a skim milk version. The milk is processed to be ultra- filtered reducing the sugar content significantly and concentrating the protein and the calcium. The protein is increased from 8 gm to 14 gm per serving. (1 cup) The milk display at Wegmans displays a complicated variety of milk choices.
We bought a half gallon of their high protein whole milk . It was over $5.00, but it was creamy and delicious. Milk is a nutritious food source, although we haven’t had whole milk in years.–trying to reduce dietary fats. Milk does have some saturated fat, but also calcium and a variety of other nutrients including vitamin D and A added. This version has the lactose removed.
We are trying it out, but there are some drawbacks to whole milk one of which is the extra calories which should be considered. 1 serving has 150 calories which is extra compared to the low calorie skim milk which we had before.
