OK so they’re not blond, but I liked the title.
We had lots of “people of color” and Latinos come to our porch this evening, way out of proportion to our Grover population.
It would be better for the future of this town if we had more affordable housing to attract more diversity. There is no visible racism in the Grove, although it was there during the Grove’s and Asbury Park’s early histories.
I’m mostly opposed to the DEI (“diversity, equity, and inclusion” ) concept. The problem here is not ethnic or racial. It is socioeconomic.
I had a Grover woman tell me that OG needed more “people of color” but she hadn’t noticed that 3 doors down was a multifamily house owned by a Chinese family. Maybe the people of OG should pay more attention to this concern, especially with Neptune Midtown and A. Park as our neighbors.
The CMA could start the process by inviting those groups mentioned above to their beaches, parades, choir membership, boardwalk, church services, Auditorium concerts, and other events. Cut rate fees or free tickets for the poor would be a way to start–eg beach badges. And the “Association” formerly known as the “Groaners” could look into this topic.
