Modern OG history—2016. Architect talk: When does a “historic Victorian design” stop being acceptable in Victorian Ocean Grove?

#30 McClintock is being fixed up. It looked similar to this before. But is this sufficiently Victorian? Blogfinger photo, June 3, 2016.

#30 McClintock is being remodeled  in 2016.  It is described as an “1875 Victorian ” by the realtors who have priced it at $800,000.   It looked similar to this in the past.  But is this design sufficiently Victorian to satisfy the people from the National  Register ?  Blogfinger photo, June 3, 2016.  What do you think?

There are many amateur architects and designers in OG.  They love to watch the construction of new Victorians as well as the remodeling of the 0ld.  Do any of  you want to comment on the job being done in Ocean Grove to maintain our historic designation?

The new construction on 27-29 Heck Ave (second beach block) has me baffled as to how fast it was approved by HPC. Specifically concerning is the Enclosed looking second floor porch/balcony. According to the Historic District Architectural Design Guidelines, Ocean Grove is a Front Porch community adhering to the Seaside Vernacular. page 21 states any new construction should incorporate a full porch and railing detail along the entire street façade. (There a completed drawings on the architects website Vickery Studio.) While the proposed drawing looks beautiful and includes a full porch on the first floor there seems to be some local Ocean Grove traditions missing on the second floor.

It is premature to comment on the McClintock house; it MAY end up looking Victorian. But that eyesore on Ocean and Webb gets the award for the ugliest building in Ocean Grove.

For the most part, the answer to the question posed in the title of this article is found in the Historic District Architectural Design Guidelines, which are available on the Township’s website. These guidelines evolve over time. They are much stronger now than they were at the time the Gannon house (first photo) was built, partly as a response to that structure. That design would not be permitted today.

The mausoleum on Ocean at Webb is an obscene display of corruption in Ocean Grove.

The monster monument on Webb and Ocean only proves that it’s “who you know and whose hands you grease ” to get what you want in our supposed historic town. Money talks, and we all know the rest.

This Mausoleum/Museum no way belongs in our town or ever should have been build.

Get rid of the CMA once and for all along with the Home Owners’ Association.
