Blogfinger recruits for its basketball team at Bagel Talk.

December 2, 2024 by Blogfinger

Paul Goldfinger, MD, Blogfinger.net.  Re-post June 2023.

I was at Bagel Talk in Ocean Grove yesterday morning when I saw a young woman with a fascinating sweatshirt.  I happen to be a person who likes to read-T shirts and sweatshirts.   She was  quite tall, and her shirt appeared to be brand new.  The letters glowed  and they said, “NYU.”

We were both waiting for our orders, so I asked her about it.

True Conversation—–Setup:  We used to live in NYC, and our son Stephen is an NYU grad.

Me:  What’s with the NYU shirt?

She: I’m going to start  college there soon.

Me: Terrific! My son went there.

She: What did he study?

Me: Dramatic writing at the Tisch School.

She: Wow.  I am going to major in business/real estate.

Me: Great!   At the end of 4 years you’ll know a lot about that.

She: I’m going to play basketball for NYU.  (A lightening bolt flashed by as she said that.)

Me:  Amazing!    You can be in New York and at Greenwich Village.

She:  Yes.  I’m excited.

Me:   Looking at her more closely–she’s got the size for college ball, she’s very pretty, she’s smart and well spoken,  and I bet she has a “full ride” scholarship.

She:  Nice chatting, but I have to go.

Me:  Likewise. Good luck.  (You never know who eats bagels!)

Later I found out some more. Her name is Josie Munson and she has graduated from the well-known  high school basketball program at Red Bank Regional (Little Silver.).  She is a Division  I college prospect, but her home and school environments have kept things in perspective.  She wanted to play ball at an academically strong college, and NYU is that plus it is a Division  III athletic powerhouse.

Internet : Josie and her parents.

To illustrate the kind of school she just attended, one of her classmates will play basketball at Skidmore.  Josie had a fine record at Red Bank and with AAU ball.  NYU online indicates how enthused they are to have her.

When I was college age, NYU had no basketball.   There had been a big time scandal. We saw a game with an NYU men’s club team playing Yeshiva U.  What can you say about any Yeshiva team?   But this one was pretty good and they played with their yarmulkes not falling off.   I don’t recall who won., but you had to check any pork chops at the door.

NYU today has 24 sports teams, and one of them is ball room dancing.  Really!

But Josie Munson made a big impression on me today at the bagel shop.  I don’t know her, but strangely  I’m proud of her…I will watch the NYU results in the future.

As for the Ocean Grove Off-Shore School of Medicine, maybe we will recruit a team, but we won’t schedule any games with Josie and NYU.

NOTE  Dec 2024:  Josie is now a 5′ 11″ sophomore forward for the NYU Violets. She contributes  mostly as a reserve.   She loves being in New York at NYU. Maybe she will work at Trump’s real estate; empire.

Josie Munson. She proves that eating bagels in Ocean Grove  can improve a jump shot.

Thanks Nettie. The last time I was on campus in the Village I met some XX volleyball players and was impressed, but I will make a note about that Kean game and the online broadcasts.

I recall in high school when girls basketball had its own silly rules. But now you get to coach wonderful players like Josie. Good luck next season. Paul Blogfinger.net

As one of her NYU coaches, we ARE thrilled to have this very well rounded awesome basketball player joining our NYU Family. Thank you for recognizing Josie and our program and you can watch all games online starting in November! We also play at Kean on Friday Nov 17 if you want to become a super fan. Go Violets!
