Why is Ocean Grove music so narrowly focused? A new musical initiative will be promoted in 2024-2025. In fact, opening night 10/19 sold out!

BLOGFINGER UPDATE. 10/20/24:   Opening night JSAC  at the Split Level Concerts SOLD OUT  on Oct 19, Saturday with  Steve Forbert and Pam Flores.

Congratulations to Troy and Mark.   You can buy advance tickets for the remainder of the series: see below.

Troy Deckebach (L) and Mark Klemow of ” Split Level Concerts”  meet with us at Blogfinger headquarters, Ocean Grove. 7/22/24

By Paul Goldfinger, MD, Editor, Blogfinger.net. 7/22/24 Re-post.

For the most part, the music in town is sponsored by the Camp Meeting Association.

There are many exceptions to their  religious music themes, but the rest are mostly classical  such as  the  Summer Stars concerts in the GA,  as well as the organ recitals by Gordon Turk and visiting organists and the famous Choir Festival.

In  late August we have the superb Sacred Masterwork concert.   And other first rate events  include  the “Songs on a Summer Afternoon” by the opera stars in residence and The Imperial Brass, and there are some orchestral  concerts.

Certain secular style programs have been eliminated, most notably the Saturday night summer pop series such as  Doo-Wops, Neil Sedaka,  ABBA, Beachboys, etc.

And we have no jazz, modern pop, country, band music  (like the Allentown Band,)  hip hop, rock, street musicians, Broadway show tunes, off-Broadway music, movie soundtracks, and other secular sources.  Blogfinger.net  presents a steady stream of secular music.

We still have secular Summer Band concerts, and occasional brass band concerts. Don’t forget that the Salvation Army band will be performing on the boards later this season–an original  programming idea.

And check the Jersey Shore Arts Center for their varied programming.  Their theater is wonderful.

We have one of the most magnificent venues for music in the US, The Great Auditorium, but its use is restricted.

However  now two local promoters will be bringing  a new style of music to the Jersey Shore Arts Center (JSAC)  Palaia Theater  in the form of a series of 7  live concerts beginning in October, featuring “Americana and Contemporary Folk Music.”

It’s not easy to define these styles, but you can go to the JSAC ticket link below for more info.

Here is an Internet definition:   The term “Americana music” was defined by the Americana Music Association (AMA) in 2020 as “…the rich threads of country, folk, blues, soul, bluegrass, gospel, and rock in our tapestry.”

Troy Deckebach of Pennsylvania  and Ocean Grove  and Mark Klemow of Belmar are the founders of this initiative.  They have quite an array of sponsors, and there will be more.

Their artists are well known and have a long history of recordings and professional appearances.

These musical styles have their roots in acoustic guitar stars such as Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchel and Joan Baez.

More modern musical  interpretations of  populist  themes have been attracting new stars, some of whom will be featured in these  JSAC programs of October through April.

Steve Forbert is one such artist who will open the series. This is his best known song: “Romeo’s Tune:”

And. from Troy,  “This QR code will send folks to a playlist consisting of original songs by the artists in this season’e lineup:”
