An Allied army, mostly Brits, was trapped on the French beaches of Dunkirk. Thanks to the Royal Air Force (Brits) and a large flotilla of civilian boats coming across the Channel, about 338,000 troops were evacuated.
About this amazing rescue operation Churchill spoke to the House of Commons and he had a lot to say, but this was never forgotten:
“We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall never surrender.”
