The New York Times (9/19, Hauser) reports that an increase in cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis “has prompted authorities in Michigan, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Jersey to warn residents to protect themselves against bites from mosquitoes.”
The rare virus “has killed at least five people in three states this year.”

Mosquito season won’t end in NJ until the temperatures remain below 50 degrees. There is no vaccine against these viral diseases.
Mosquitoes can transmit certain diseases including Eastern Equine Encephalitis which has a mortality rate of 33%. There also is the West Nile Virus which is more common.
Cover yourself outside and use repellent containing DEET.
Don’t forget to remove standing water, even a capful, around your house to prevent the buggers from reproducing. They do not die after biting, and the females use your blood to fertilize the eggs.
