We used to go on hay rides in high school. This time my date was Ann, who if they gave an award for “most cheerful” she would be the unanimous winner.

It was a dark chilly autumn night. We were all in a wagon filled with hay and pulled by a horse that had some gas problems creating foggy streamers.

Ann and I were behind the driver. Most of the couples were burrowing themselves into the hay, disappearing for some reason.

But Ann was one of those people who liked to organize activities. She was a cute twirler who was always leading some cheer at the football games in between tossing her baton a mile high.

So Ann wanted to liven up the hay ride, “Hey everybody, let’s sing!”

But no one was interested, so Ann and I sang a few duets and by then the ride was about over. Well, for some reason we never dated again, and being in the band, my next choice was the drum majorette who spoke softly, wore a big hat, and carried a big mace. She also had a fine sense of rhythm.

Anyhow we had fun, but in the end, I took a sophomore flute player to the Junior Prom. She played softly, but could she carry a tune!
