TO THE EDITOR:

Re: Short term rentals in Ocean Grove, New Jersey

April 07, 2024

Short term rentals have been the heart and soul of Ocean Grove, NJ and the Jersey Shore for over 100 years. For many families, a 1 week vacation home is the cornerstone of their summer vacation.  For shore town businesses, they are the life blood of profitability.

Town governments, town residents, contractors, service providers–so many  people benefit from short term rentals and the families that visit quaint Jersey Shore towns like Ocean Grove.

There currently is a Neptune, NJ ordinance proposed, that as written, will literally destroy and eliminate many valuable, properly manned vacation rentals and negatively impact the town and all the people mentioned above.

It appears to be a very draconian approach to possibly address limited STR issues that could be handled in other ways not so destructive to the town, to  the many honest, dependable home owners, to other residents, and to vacationing families, many who return year after year.

Please contact the Neptune Committee members and voice your concerns and  if you can,  attend the Township meeting on April 8th at 6 pm in the Neptune municipal building.

Help save Ocean Grove, NJ and the tradition of Jersey Shore family vacations.

Editor’s reply:   OG gets crowded with renters each summer.  A Grover we know gets $8,000 for a summer month in his  rental  cottage.  And add $150.00 to clean.

Money is driving this topic. And where does Airbnb stand?  Opponents of this ordinance need to explain the provisions of the law–send us a summary and we will post it.  The devil is in the details.    PG. Blogfinger.net

Nancy Wilson has a song about that crowding—“The Nearness of You:”

Can you post the proposed new laws? We can’t find them.

Disagree ! Short term rentals are ruining OG. Many blocks in OG have seen a drastic increase of rentals on their blocks.

Most are bought by investors with the sole purpose of renting them out. These are stable blocks that have had long time friendly residents – neighbors. A nice homey block where everyone knew each other & looked after one another.

Now instead of every 2 weeks there are renters who are transient and not very friendly nor interested in history, spirituality , and “vibe” of OG .

Their main interest is going to the beach by day & partying in Asbury Park by night .
