4.8 mag. earthquake hits Ocean Grove. 10:20 am. 4/5/24. What did it do to our pilings?

April 5, 2024 by Blogfinger

Paul Goldfinger photo last year  April 15,  2023 as the new pier was opened  to the public,  and everyone who could fit came on board at the same time.  No one then worried about the structure, although I never did go to the end.     We now know that this pier is vulnerable, a diagnosis made recently, even before this earthquake*

Paul Goldfinger, MD,  Editor, Blogfinger.net report.  Ocean Grove, NJ, USA. 4/5/24  10:30 AM

This morning there was a  quake whose epicenter in Lebanon, N.J.  is not too far from us in Ocean  Grove.  Our 1880  house shook without any evident damage, but we haven’t yet conducted a thorough search. It lasted a few minutes. There also was a secondary quake in some places nearby.

I consider this to be a stress test for our historic architecture.  Our homes  did survive Sandy in 2012, however  that was rain, floods and winds; not quakes.

Not only are our homes at risk for flooding, being surrounded by two lakes and  an ocean, but the fire risks here are enormous for a variety of reasons.

Regarding our vulnerable homes, we have the highest  concentration of authentic Victorian houses in America, and the engineering from the 19th century was less than ideal.  Many have “balloon” wood construction which could result in one of our wooden houses to turn into rubble within minutes.

As for the pier*, we know that several pilings have already  been damaged, and the new pier has been closed since December pending an engineering study including divers inspecting under water.

If any of you Grovers have anything to share regarding this quake with all its “shake, rattle and rolling” please send us an email at blogfinger@verizon.net.  I will post your brief comment if you have anything of interest to share.

April Nor’easter Arrives
Almost 700,000 customers were were without power  across the Northeast yesterday as a powerful storm system brought high winds and more than 2 feet of snow to some locations in the region. Three people were killed in separate incidents after trees fell on their vehicles.

Meteorologists said the storm was the biggest April nor’easter to hit the area since 2020. The weather phenomenon occurs when Arctic air carried southward from Canada by the jet stream meets warmer, moist air off the Atlantic coast. See a video from the Massachusetts coast here, along with photos from the upper Northeast.

In other weather-related news, forecasters said yesterday the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season has the potential to be the most active on record. The early analysis predicts 23 named storms (compared to 14 to 15 on average), with five systems reaching Category 3 status or higher (the yearly average is around three). Hurricane season begins June 1 and peaks in September.

Thank you RRS. I wonder how many people in OG actually know what they are covered for. We just requested copies of our policies: house, car, liability.

Homeowners in earthquake prone areas may wish to verify that their homeowners insurance covers damage related to earthquakes.

In many policies, earthquake damage is not included as a “Named Peril” but may be available for separate purchase with an additional premium.
