   From George: “Dick Haymes singing ‘It Might as Well Be Spring’ keeps running through my head. Nice to hear an old-fashioned ballad without the rock beat background.

   “Haymes sang this as the male lead in State Fair, though he acted in few other movies as far as I know.”

   Editor’s Note: For those of you who love the Great American Songbook, like this Dick Haymes song, there is a wonderful FM radio show on every Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm devoted to vocalists from that era. Michael Bourne has hosted “Singers Unlimited” since the 1980’s. He broadcasts from WBGO 88.3 out of Newark, New Jersey. It is perhaps the premier jazz station in the northeast.

   The reception is poor in Ocean Grove, but that is no longer a problem. Just go the the WBGO.org website with your phone (or other device) and click on the live stream.

   I have a small Bluetooth speaker which is amazing for high quality listening. It is the Harman/Kardon Esquire-mini. It is 5 1/4 by 3 inches, . Just link your phone using Bluetooth to the speaker. Very easy.

   Or you can also enjoy the show by simply turning the volume up on your smartphone, but I like the extra “hi-fi” sound.

   George Held wrote this haiku on the morning that he shared it with us, March 11, 2018. There is beauty in simplicity, and George saw it all as the tip of a crocus broke through the snow.

   He selected our song, “It Might as Well Be Spring” by Dick Haymes. This beautiful song was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the 1945 movie State Fair, and the song won the Oscar that year. Here is a lyric from the song:

   “I haven’t seen a crocus or a rosebud
   Or a robin on the wing
   But I feel so gay in a melancholy way
   That it might as well be spring
   It might as well be spring.”

   George is just a little bit ahead of the spring curve with his wonderful haiku, and actual spring begins in just a few days.
