It was raining hard at 9:30 pm when the first explosion occurred. I turned around to see the spark shower–was it fireworks? Then two more explosions in quick successions, emanating from the overhead wires followed by more spark showers.
What did I do? I was upstairs so I shouted, “Eileen–call 911.” Then I grabbed my cameras and went out on the upstairs porch. The operator said it was a transformer and we should go inside. But I went outside .
A few neighbors appeared. One saw me and asked if I was doing some exotic medical experiment.
“You mean like creating a Frankenstein?”
Then another neighbor called and wanted to know why we had power since he did not, but no one around us did. He thought it was “luck.”
Eileen recalled that a similar situation happened a few years go when we learned that we are on a different circuit—thus our lights stayed on while his were out.
About ten minutes later a fire truck came by and stopped. They went up a pole and did some work. Then they sat in the rig for awhile before driving off.
A short while later the power came back on.
It was a strange coincidence but I was watching a movie about Einstein and the atom bomb when the A bomb exploded on the screen right before the explosions out my window.
It was only last May when a light pole in front of our house was set on fire by some party balloons causing a short. We don’t have parties, so it wasn’t us. That was at the same intersection where tonight’s fun and games occurred (link below)
