I have read so many books about the Holocaust because I, like so many Jews, can never put it totally out of our minds. I have traced the story of anti-semitism back to ancient times when our people were enslaved in Egypt (the story of Passover.) In fact my Hebrew name is Pesach–Passover. The story of the Jewish people is so remarkable, and the truth of it all is documented in ways more than in the Old Testament. (The Torah.)
As a child, I met people who survived and still had their numbers on their arms. The story of WWII is endlessly fascinating, and many survivors moved to Brooklyn, especially in the Coney Island areas. We often went to the beach at Coney and that’s where I saw those tattoos.
The best book on the subject by Yiddish novelist Issac Bashevis Singer was turned into an unforgettable movie “Enemies, a Love Story.” Singer was born and raised in Poland, which is where my family emigrated from, and he escaped Hitler in 1935 and came to the US where he won a Nobel Prize in literature.
This photo from Schindler’s list depicts the rounding up of Polish Jews by the Germans. They were packed onto trains and taken to concentration camps and then death camps.
