Coaster: “Township Attorney Anthony said that the OGCMA had approached the town in the past to ask that the township police department help enforce the private organization’s rules and regs surrounding accessing the beach.”
There is a historic precedent regarding such “help” when after governance was returned to Neptune in 1980, the Township wanted to pass a parking ordinance designed to have de facto “no cars ” in the Grove on Sundays.
That ordinance said that parking in the Grove on Sunday was illegal. So anyone who drove into town on Sunday could do so, but they could not park.
That ordinance never prevailed as far as we could see in researching this point, but Neptune did try to help its friend and accomplice.
THE CHIMES:
Parking in the Ocean Grove streets over Sunday has become so popular this summer that Chief of Police Frank Tantum issued an order that all cars, with the exception of those owned by doctors, should be removed from the streets on Sundays.” OGT 7 Aug. 1914
