The census count in Ocean Grove is about 3,000, but it becomes ten times that as summer comes roaring in. Out of state plates are all over, and parking is, as expected, especially limited. At the North End we have the Asburian invaders, but also there is Firemen’s Park where groups of strangers congregate with many kids on scooters racing around the footpaths.
As darkness turns the corner, the clatter of fireworks begins from near and far.
The classic menu is that a house is rented and then 20 people or more show up. Today is July 2, and it is a long day with daylight stretched out to about 8 pm.
We met Sherry from Pennsylvania who rents the same apartment each summer in a multi-family house on Mt. Tabor Way. She was relaxing on the porch as evening descended and she was palpably happy. “I come here every summer for ten days. I love the quiet.”
She says, “My name is spelled like the drink.”
