The design of the new pier is to finally put a stop to the perpetual cycle of stormy destruction followed by rebuilding. The distal end is of special interest with its powerful steel framework. The structure over the ocean will be higher than the part over the sand.
The wooden section is supported by strong pilings driven into the sand by those huge pieces of equipment that resemble some prehistoric creatures.
It is the equivalent of what happened to beachfront houses after Sandy—they were all rebuilt on stilts. And that is essential if coastal communities are to stop the recurrent destruction.
The Florida coast line will have to address this approach after Ian, although the Florida concerns are more complicated than ours at the Jersey Shore.
I am writing about that on my Ft. Myers blog: TropicanaForum.com
THE EMBERS “I Love Beach Music.” The CMA will make this pier the best ever. (But….will there be fishing there? They haven’t used the F word yet.)
The metal is a cofferdam. It will be gone when pier is completed.
Only used in construction. Surprised no correction from usual
cast of pen names.
