Editor’s note: After Sandy destroyed the pier and the Fishing Club’s building at the pier, the Club hoped that the CMA would allow them to rebuild. They even offered to finance the project.
But it became clear that the CMA had other plans including a new pier, and they won’t again allow a private group to prevent the public from going out to the end.
I interviewed a member of the Fishing Club and asked what they would do if denied a base on the next pier.
He said that they would become a surf fishing club. I don’t know what the Club’s status is now, but they have not been seen as a group surf fishing.
Surf fishing is a tradition at the Jersey Shore. Mostly it is a solitary pursuit, and you rarely see such fishermen, but maybe they go out very early in the morning. It can be done even in winter.
It is fun, and you can get the necessary gear at any surf/bait shop.
