This post card was postmarked Hammondsport, NY on March 19, 1909. It cost one cent to mail and it was sent to Miss Mary Green of Hammondsport in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. There was no street address. Evidently the mailman knew exactly where to deliver it. Gerald Brace sent it.
He said, “Well Mary when are you going to move? When you move to Cohoton, let me know your address. Good-bye. From Gerald.”
I looked up Hammondsport. It now has less than 1,000 people and is in wine country. It was recently voted the “coolest small town in America.”
Supposedly a postmark is placed at the origin of the mailing; maybe not. So where was Gerald? At the Jersey Shore we suspect.
And as for the girl with the wet bathing suit, she must have been a Grover girl who enjoyed attracting attention in her summer clothes, and even then there were those who wanted her picture. The artist must have started the tradition, now found on Blogfinger, of showing OG girls at the beachfront.
And Gerald, having decided on this postcard, must have been thinking of OG girls in their summer clothes and he must have had beautiful Miss Mary Green on his mind——wearing a Grovarian wet bathing suit.
