Herons live on Wesley Lake

We have seen a Great Blue Heron who lives on Wesley Lake.  It likes to hang out at the western end  along with Canada Geese.  But the photo above documents another member of the heron family who lives there.  We haven’t been able to pin down the species any further.  How do they survive in the polluted lake?
