SHIRLEY BASSEY: from her “Greatest Hits.”
Editor’s note: Over the years I took a lot of grief because of this song. People sing it to me all the time, and if you hit our doorbell, Shirley sings a few bars.
My Dad had 007 on his license plate and on his phone number. People associate the name and song with Bond, but they forget that Goldfinger was a blond-headed villain.
That summer I was working at a Catskill resort on the athletic staff. A guest came back from the movies and tried to torture me with Goldfinger jokes and that damn song; so I threw him into the pool. It was all in fun.
And you wouldn’t believe the Doctor Goldfinger jokes–my favorite: Dr. Boldfinger.
These days, kids say to me, “What a cool name,” but they never heard of the movie.
Here is a clip from that film where Goldfinger gets to play his “golden harp.”
