a. Israel is unpacking its economy carefully. All shoppers wear masks.
Certain shops are reopening, but they must strictly follow guidelines such as cleanliness, protective gear, and social distancing. They are allowing beauty salons and hair dressers to open. Restaurants can do take-out as long as there a physical barrier between the worker and the customer.
Malls will remain closed
b. Asbury Park Press: Governor discusses the pandemic vs. summer at the shore this year:
“Gov. Phil Murphy said residents should be prepared for a different kind of summer on the Jersey Shore amid the coronavirus pandemic as officials reported Thursday an increase of more than 350 cases in Monmouth and Ocean counties.”
“Asked about impact of the pandemic on the Shore, Murphy said he would be thrilled to see a “semblance of normal,” but cast doubt on whether restrictions would end by Memorial Day weekend, the traditional start of the summer season.”
Even after the shutdown is lifted, Murphy said, the pandemic will mean no packed beaches and boardwalks this summer.
He said Memorial Day parades almost certainly won’t take place this year. (OG’s was canceled by Neptune Township.) The CMA remains silent on these issues
c. On April 6 Blogfinger posted a piece on ventilator care for Coronavirus victims. We pointed out that the mortality rates for those who wind up on a ventilator are very high.
Now, we are hearing reports that the ventilators are being overused and causing lung damage. These reports from here and Europe indicate that the mechanical ventilator with a tube in the throat can be successfully avoided in some cases.
For those of you who want to tackle this highly technical topic, here is a link from Reuters.com:
d. What can be done short of a cure? Ongoing trials are trying to find something to alleviate symptoms, but so far nothing is approved. The FDA is trying:
The Food and Drug Administration has ongoing clinical trials for 72 drugs to treat COVID-19, therapeutics that aren’t a cure, but which will treat the symptoms of the disease, FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn announced Friday.
“When it comes to therapeutics, we are leaving no stone unturned in finding treatments for COVID-19,” Hahn said at the daily White House press briefing.
“You do know that we don’t have any currently approved therapeutics for COVID-19,” Hahn said. “But we are actively involved in both the academic and the commercial and private sector to find those. Seventy-two trials of therapeutics are underway in the United States under FDA oversight, and 211 are in the planning stages.”
