“Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true.”

* 1940.  From the movie Pinocchio.  The song won an Oscar.

**Portnoy’s Complaint by Phillip Roth was published in 1969. Everyone I knew read it. It was a huge best seller.  If you did read it, you will understand the photograph above.

Stephen Goldfinger reminds us of another novel whose hero was a young prep school student with an interest in girls. That was Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Ryen (1951) by J. D. Salinger.
